![]() FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DOUGLASS AND FOX RECOGNIZED AS FOUNDERS ON THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ENERGY AND MINERAL LAW FOUNDATIONPittsburgh, PA June 4, 2004 Samuel L. Douglass, an attorney with Rothman Gordon, P.C., and Cyril A. Fox, Jr., a professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, were recently honored by the Energy and Mineral Foundation for their roles as founders of the organization at the 25th Annual Institute. In 1979, Mr. Douglass envisioned the creation of an educational institution focused on mineral law. Working with Mr. Fox, the idea matured into a two-day seminar in the classrooms at the Pitt Law School in March 1980 the first Annual Institute of the Eastern Mineral Law Foundation.In a short time the Eastern Mineral Law Foundation (later renamed the Energy and Mineral Law Foundation) became the pre-eminent source of legal scholarship and education on mineral law in the eastern United States. Today the 24 volumes of Annual Institute Proceedings, together with a library of unpublished papers on file, represent the best source of legal research and writing on mineral law in this part of the country. "Through their efforts we now have this foundation, permanently endowed, that will offer for future generations a unique educational opportunity, scholarships to needy law students, and a library of scholarships and research on natural resources," says Thomas Lane, Professor at West Virginia University. Mr. Douglass served as the Foundation President from 1979 through 1981. Mr. Fox served as the Foundation President from 1984 to 1985. Mr. Douglass received his B.A. from Mount Union College in 1955 and earned his LLB from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 1958. He is a member of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers, the American Bar Association, the Pennsylvania Bar Association, and the Allegheny County Bar Association. Mr. Douglass was part of the legal team that recently won from the Pennsylvania Supreme Court the termination of oil and gas assessments and he served as Solicitor for The School District of the Township of Upper St. Clair for 28 years. Mr. Douglass resides in the South Hills with his wife, Judith. Mr. Fox received his AB from the College of Wooster and his J.D. from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. He is a member of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers, the American Law Institute, and the American, Pennsylvania, and Allegheny County Bar Associations. Mr. Fox co-authored Pennsylvania Real Estate Tax Sales and Municipal Claims.
