![]() Charlene Canty has always sung, but in high school, a music teacher suggested that she consider a career in classical music. Charlene began to listen to classical vocals and decided to pursue a B.A. in Vocal Performance at Dana School of Music in Youngstown, Ohio. The Masters Program at Duquesne University brought her to Pittsburgh, but she discovered that juggling graduate work with a job that started at midnight was wearing her down. Through a stroke of good fortune, she was introduced to Shelley Elovitz, head of the Workers' Compensation Department at Rothman Gordon. Shelley saw that Charlene's organization skills were a great match for the Firm and offered her a flexible schedule that allowed her to continue her singing career. Charlene, a soprano, says that there is always something about a role that draws her in, but some of her favorite operas include Mozart's Magic Flute and Don Giovanni for comedy and Puccini's Suor Angelica for tragedy. She has performed nationally and internationally, but you can usually catch her in the Greater Pittsburgh area, singing with such esteemed companies as the Bach Choir, the Pittsburgh Concert Chorale or The Three Rivers Choral Society. Charlene is especially excited to be a part of the Opera Theater of Pittsburgh's groundbreaking reinterpretation of Wagner's The Ring Saga, which brings the massive epic cycle to Pittsburgh for the first time ever in four action-packed operatic experiences. Considered the greatest operas ever written, they will be sung in English in a condensed version by Jonathan Dove. Parts I and II (Rhinegold and The Valkyrie) will be performed July 15 through 17, 2005. Charlene is currently learning four roles for this year's series, but unfortunately for us, she never seems to practice at the office. Other Rothman Gordon Stories: |
