City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pass CROWN Act
October 21, 2020
The City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County have both passed the Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair (CROWN) Act, which prohibits employment, housing, and public accommodation discrimination based on hairstyle and protective and cultural hair textures and hairstyles.
The goal of the CROWN Act is to reduce barriers facing people of color and religious minorities who face unprecedented discrimination in the workplace, when searching for a home, and when entering a business. This ordinance was modeled after similar legislation introduced and passed in states across the United States and by the United States House of Representatives.
Those working in the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County now have legal protections if they are discriminated against based on their hair in certain circumstances. If you experience discrimination in the workplace, contact us online or call (412) 338-1195.
